About the product
Megger’s TM1800 series of circuit breaker analysers have been built based on more than 20 years of experience from over 4000 delivered breaker analysers. Their modular construction makes it possible to configure the TM1800 for measurements on all known types of circuit breakers in operation in today’s power industry.
The robust design of the TM1800 series contains powerful technology that streamlines circuit breaker testing. Sophisticated measurement modules enable significant time savings as many parameters can be measured simultaneously, eliminating the need for a new setup each time. Moreover, the TM1800 series can be used with the dual ground testing method using the DCM module (Dynamic Capacitive Measurement). DualGround™ makes testing safe and saves time by keeping the circuit breaker grounded on both sides throughout the test.
There are five TM1800 models: Basic, Standard, Standard for DualGround™, Expert, and Expert for DualGround™. You can order the standard model to measure time and travel on a circuit breaker with two breaks per phase and three individual operating mechanisms. From there, you can customise the TM1800 with many choices in modules from DCM (DualGround™), Digital, Aux, and even a Printer module. Extra Control, Analog, and Timing modules can be added as needed for a variety of options.
All configurations have a keyboard with a roller mouse and an 8 inch outdoor screen that is easy to see in bright sunlight.

FAQs
The TM1800 is the most feature-rich and functional circuit breaker time and travel analyser on the market. It has a modular design that you can configure for simple or complex time and travel analysis as well as some online testing and monitoring. If you need the most flexibility and expandability for future testing, the TM1800 is the analyser to have. It also has the greatest number of timing channels available to test old air blast circuit breakers still found in the field.
The Timing M/R module uses one hook-up to test all the critical timing parameters of a contact without needing reconnection or special setups. One Timing M/R module, with 12 analogue channels (6 U + 6 I), will time up to six main contacts plus six pre-insertion resistor (PIR) contacts. The module also measures the PIR values. With the same hook-up, the Timing M/R module can perform static and dynamic resistance measurements (using the SDRM202 accessory). The Timing M/R module uses patented Active Interference Suppression to obtain correct timing and accurate PIR values regardless of interference in high voltage substations. The channels are also used for voltage measurement during SRM and DRM tests. The Timing M/R module features:
- Six inputs per module
- High resolution 15 μV and up to 40 kHz sampling
- Measures main and parallel resistor contact timing
- Measures the resistance value of parallel resistors (a.k.a., PIR)
The Analog module measures any analogue output from a transducer mounted on a circuit breaker, enabling measurements of motion, speed, current, voltage, pressure, vibration, etc. A motion measurement of a circuit breaker is simple thanks to the flexible and easy-to-use interface. Universal transducers, specialised transducers, and conversion tables are available for several circuit breakers. See the accessory data sheet. The Analog module features:
- Three channels per module
- Supports industrial analogue transducers
- Insulated channels measure up to 250 V AC/DC
- High resolution of 0.3 mV and sampling rate of 40 kHz
With digital transducers, motion and other measurements become even more accurate, faster, and easier. The Digital module enables the use of an incremental rotary transducer for measuring a circuit breaker's motion, velocity, and damping characteristics. The Digital module features:
- Six channels per module
- Supports incremental transducers with RS-422 connection
- Up to ±32000 pulses resolution
- Up to 20 kHz sampling
A Timing Aux module expands the TM1800 system with timing inputs for measuring any auxiliary contact on the circuit breaker. It measures the timing (polarity insensitive) of both dry and wet contacts; for example, the timing of the spring charging motor, anti-pump relay, etc.Timing Aux module features:
- Six channels per module
- Polarity insensitive
- Dry and wet auxiliary contacts
The Printer module offers a convenient and practical way of making printouts of test results in the field. The printouts contain numerical and graphical results. Printer templates delivered pre-installed in the TM1800 are easy to adapt to suit specific needs for a clear and complete report of all tested parameters. The Printer module features:
- Thermal printer sensitive line dot method
- Paper width 114 mm (4 inch)
- Printing speed 50 mm/s (400 dot lines/s)
The HDD module is a part of the Basic unit. Storage of all setup, user customisation, and measurement data is done in the HDD module. You can replace the module easily, e.g., when different users share one TM1800 and want individual setups, data, and configurations. The HDD module features include the following:
- Change setup, user customisation, and measurement data by changing the HDD module
- Easy to remove during transportation
Yes, the TM1800 is designed for upgrading and expansion. You can purchase the configuration you need now and as testing and parameters change, add modules to meet all your testing needs.
Yes, all modules are easily switched (while TM1800 is powered off) between TM1800s. Each module is individually calibrated, so swapping modules does not require additional calibration. This feature also makes it possible to borrow modules from other units temporarily. For example, suppose you have multiple standard TM1800s for different crews but need to test an air blast circuit breaker with eight breaks per phase. In that case, you can borrow three Timing M/R modules from other TM1800s, avoiding the need for ganging multiple timers together.
Yes, even though the TM1800 has a built-in computer and keyboard, you can still control the TM1800 remotely using your laptop and CABA Win.
The TM1800 is compatible with both TM1700 and older TM1600 test plans. CABA will automatically re-configure the test plans if needed, or you can manually edit the test plans with the convenient Test Plan Editor (TPE) built into the latest version of CABA Win.
CABA Win/Local has various test plans built into the software, including generic and breaker-specific test plans. A test plan creation wizard, the TPE, allows you to make and modify personalised test plans. With over 500 individual parameters available, you can customise and cover all their circuit breaker testing needs.
No particular accessory is required, but many optional accessories and transducers are available to capture a variety of parameters that may need to be checked on a circuit breaker. The Analog module is a multifunctional input channel that allows multiple types of transducers and connections to maintain backward compatibility with previous testing. The Analog module also allows for future expansion as different transducers are developed. See the CB (circuit breaker) accessories data sheet for a complete testing accessories list.
The Control module generates the selected circuit breaker operation sequences accurately and bounceless. The Control module, with nine analogue channels (3 U + 6 I), also measures vital parameters during the test. The coil current, control voltage, coil resistance, and auxiliary contact timing are automatically measured for each phase without additional test lead connections. The features of the Control module include the following:
- Three independent contact functions per module
- Pre-programmed sequences C, O, C–O, O–C, O–C–O
- Measures timing of a and b auxiliary contacts in the control circuit
- Measures coil current (max 30 A), voltage, and resistance
For reference, you only need one Control module to operate circuit breakers with a three-phase operating mechanism. You will need two control modules to operate a 3-phase circuit breaker with single-phase operating mechanisms.
The DCM module enables DualGround™ testing, which increases safety and makes testing easier. Each pair of a Timing M/R and DCM module provides up to six channels. Each channel requires a special DCM cable with integrated electronics. The TM1800 system can be equipped with multiple DCM and Timing M/R module pairs that enable timing measurement on up to 18 contacts. The DCM module features:
- Six channels per module
- Timing test using DualGround™
- Safe, fast, and easy testing
- Two breaks per phase
- GIS breaker testing
