Batteries are the dc power supply that keeps the protection and control system running when there is a power failure in transmission and distribution substations; however, they are easy to overlook and not always maintained properly. NERC standard PRC-005-6 documents and implements requirements for the maintenance of all protection systems affecting the reliability of the Bulk Electric System (BES) to ensure that these systems are operational and reliable. The programs defined in this standard detail compliance dates and time frames for each of the NERC requirements.
One of the requirements in this standard is that a Protection System Maintenance Program (PSMP) shall be established and the document defines what testing should be performed for specific types of batteries.
Enforcement of this revision started on January 1st, 2016, and utilities are required to comply with the standard that the Compliance Enforcement Authority enforces for each of the eight regional entities.
This presentation will cover the NERC PRC-005-6 specifications for battery testing, and the implementation plan for different types of batteries, and will discuss the two main types of tests required by the standard: Load (capacity) test and Impedance (Ohmic) test. For each test, it will be described how to perform the tests and analyze the results.
